The SABIC facility in Bergen op Zoom has a test lab where plastic parts are tested.One of the test installations is the Head impactor. The Head impactor can generate an impact on a plastic object with a high pressure cylinder (hydraulic / nitrogen). The control of this installation was outdated and therefore needed replacement. In addition to replacing the hydraulic, nitrogen and electrical controls, the safety of the machine has also been reviewed again.

By carrying out a risk analysis in accordance with NEN-EN-ISO 12100, the additional measures have been implemented together with the Client to bring the installation up-to-date in accordance with the current Machinery Directive. These additions consist of the installation of additional guards and a number of critical sensors (latches and firing buttons) in the new emergency stop system.

The P&ID and the functional design of the existing system have been redesigned for the new control system. Based on this, a new control unit and PLC program has been designed

The control desk is divided into several compartments: a compartment for the hydraulic / nitrogen components and a compartment for the electrical components and PLC control. On top of the operating desk a touchscreen is provided to operate and monitor the installation.

For the professional disciplines of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and automation, the assignment consisted of:

• Performing a risk analysis;
• Engineering, delivery and construction of a new control system;
• Factory Acceptance Test (FAT);
• Mounting and connecting new control systems and sensors on location;
• Installation of additional physical shielding;
• Testing and commissioning;
• Site Acceptance Test (SAT);
• Complete technical construction file.

The responsibility of Delmeco within this project is the Turn-Key delivery of the control system and additional measures for all disciplines from design to realization.
