Over the past years, various experiments and the production of medical isotopes have generated waste that is currently stored at NRG. Due to evolving regulations, this historic waste must now be transferred to a central storage facility at COVRA (Central Organisation for Radioactive Waste). To transport the waste safely to COVRA by road, it must first be properly packaged in accordance with transport regulations.

Delmeco has designed and built an installation in which historical waste can be safely packaged so that it can be transported by road without exposing people to radiation.

Delmeco also supplied a so called RAP container that is used to transfer the drum packed waste from the storage facility to the dock station of the Waste Treatment Unit (WTU). Inside the WTU, the drums are transferred from the RAP container and loaded into a transport container using a special  drum that minimizes waste and a DDS (Double Lid System) drum.

Because radiation levels are too high for human exposure, the entire installation is equipped with 450 mm of steel shielding to ensure safe operation. The WTU is enclosed in a stainless-steel housing and features trolleys, cranes, manipulators, a double-lid closure system, lead glass viewing windows, shielded doors, airlocks, shutters, and an HVAC system that maintains a negative pressure and climate control inside the unit. The installation is designed with a Single Failure Safety concept, ensuring that waste can always be safely removed no matter what happens

The scope of work for the mechanical, electrical and automation disciplines included:

  • Design, engineering, drafting and structural analysis of the WTU by Delmeco Raadgevend Ingenieursbureau BV

  • Manufacturing and delivery of the WTU

  • Manufacturing and delivery of the shielding around the WTU

  • Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) performed at Delmeco

  • On-site installation including the shielding

  • Commissioning of the system

  • Site Acceptance Test (SAT)

Delmeco was responsible for the full turn-key delivery of the WTU, covering all engineering disciplines from design to realization.
