For COVRA N.V., Delmeco designed, built, and installed a Drum Discharge System (DDS). This system enables the safe and fully automated processing of plastic drums containing nuclear liquids—without requiring human operators to come into contact with radioactive substances.

Scope of work:

  • Engineering and design by Delmeco Raadgevend Ingenieursbureau B.V.

  • Construction of the complete installation

  • On-site installation at COVRA

  • Execution of a Site Acceptance Test (SAT)

The installation uses multiple automated manipulators to extract plastic drums from transport containers and empty them. This process separates the liquid waste from the solid (the drum itself) without any direct human intervention. As a result, both the safety and efficiency of the waste processing operation are significantly improved.

Delmeco delivered the system fully operational, covering the entire process from design to realization, and was responsible for both mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines.

Client:

COVRA N.V. (Central Organisation for Radioactive Waste) is responsible for the safe processing and storage of radioactive substances—both solid and liquid—in the Netherlands. COVRA plays a central role in the national management of nuclear waste.
